Balloon Festival 2012 Part 1

After having such a good time at the Albuquerque Balloon Festival last year, I knew we would be going again this year before we left El Paso for good.

This year my best friend for the last 15 years came over from Houston and went with us.

Actually, she took the kids on Thursday and let me and Jerry borrow her Harley for our trip.
That's why she's my best friend.  :)

Now, he is obsessed with modifying his smaller bike to make it more like this beast.
We will see about that.

We spend all day Friday sightseeing and enjoying each others company without the kiddos for a change.

We arrived at the hotel last Friday night to meet up with the rest of the gang.
And went immediately to bed so we could be up bright and early for the Mass Ascension of the balloons Saturday morning.

The weather messed up our plans.
After getting up at 5am, sitting in traffic for an hour, and finally getting some decent coffee at the gas station, we found out that the wind was too high for the balloons to launch.

Here's Michele with no balloons to show for our efforts.

At least there was a beautiful sunrise.

After our parking lot picnic lunch, Jerry and I headed off to spend the day together again.

We took a scenic byway where we saw spectacular mountains and valleys.

We played at the streams and go the chance to see the Aspens changing colors.

We drove through tunnels carved into the mountains.

After which my macho man husband decided to hike down into the
canyon to get some good pictures.

I stayed safely up at the top, thank you very much.

We got to enjoy a late afternoon lunch at a cozy mountain cafe where they had the most delicious green chile chicken soup.

We joined back up with the family in time to let the kids have a bike ride with Daddy before the nighttime festivities started.

Yep, James is wearing a pink helmet.
I plan on showing this to his girlfriend later.

The kids played around while we waited for the balloon glow and fireworks.

After yet another gorgeous sunset...

We enjoyed the balloon glow from a distance before the fireworks started.

It was an amazing way to end a wonderful Saturday.

And that was just the first day.
I will share our Sunday with you tomorrow.
